The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush and prevented individuals with any disability from being discriminated against in a variety of contexts. All federal and government agencies, including schools, are required to abide by the guidelines. Private companies that employ 15 or more people or that run their business for 20 or more weeks per year are also required to comply with the ADA. This means providing accommodations such as wheelchair access, handicap parking, and making information technology more accessible to all users. If a person has cerebral palsy, for example, they should be able to use the internet with equal ease as their non-disabled peers.

Because some websites and hardware companies are already providing top accommodations for users, individuals with disabilities can do anything online these days. Some disabled individuals even have their own YouTube channels and blogs. You don’t want your website to be among the ones they cannot use, because you will lose a significant portion of your potential audience.

At On The Map Marketing, we specialize in digital marketing and building websites that are ADA compliant. Our services also include developing ADA-compliant apps for mobile devices.

Here are some additional things we can help you with:

What is Section 508?

Section 508 is a portion of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and 1998, and should be familiar to web developers. This mandates that all electronic and information technology be accessible to all individuals regardless of their ability or disability. Because technology advances every year, Section 508 was updated in 2017 to close the gaps between the versions from previous decades.

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines

Websites are made by individuals all around the world for other users all around the world. So in 2008 the World Wide Web Consortium created the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. Within these guidelines are four standards on how text, sound, code and mark ups should be created in order to make a website more accessible to users who are utilizing assistive technology to access a website. These four principles that underlie each of the guidelines are:

  • Perceivable
  • Operable
  • Understandable
  • Robust

Plug-Ins That Assist With ADA Compliance

Plug-ins help you meet the standards in Section 508 as well as the most recent WCAG level A and level AA compliance guidelines. The conformance levels are:

  • Level A: A website meets the minimum level of accessibility but does not provide broad accessibility for many situations.
  • Level AA: A website achieves a broad accessibility in for many situations and is optimized to be used with a variety of assistive technologies.
  • Level AAA: This is the highest level of accessibility possible, but is also very difficult for organizations to reach this level.

Most government websites, schools, universities and privately owned websites try to achieve a level AA conformance so that their website can be accessible to many individuals with disabilities.
